MALAYSIA MOVES INTO BLOCKCHAIN FOR IDENTITY MANAGEMENT

MIMOS Berhad, a strategic research agency under the Malaysian Government Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), has signed an MoU with the Worldcoin Foundation, Tools for Humanity (TFH) and MyEG, a leading e-government services provider, to integrate Worldcoin technology into the country’s digital infrastructure.

MIMOS will serve as the technical backbone, while MyEG will bring infrastructure and support for integration. The two previously signed an MOU in 2022 to jointly build the Malaysia Blockchain Infrastructure (MBI).

The new agreement appears to cover a broad swath of potential collaborations on digital infrastructure, manufacturing and national blockchain projects. It promises to ripple throughout Malaysia’s economy, contributing to the development of a new skilled digital workforce and improving security, efficiency and scalability of digital ecosystems.

Other potential areas of collaboration for Malaysia include:

  1. Joint manufacturing of the Worldcoin iris-scanning orb device; and
  2. Bridging the World Chain blockchain to connect with Malaysia’s National Blockchain Infrastructure (direct pdf link).

The Worldcoin Foundation, which was founded by OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, will work to ensure that its technology is open source and freely available, while TFH will provide technical expertise and support for both the Orb and World App.

In support of MIMOS’s initiatives, MYEG will work on technical integrations and hardware deployment.
